Conversation #11

My house-mate Jason and Conversation #8 guest-star Nick are around in my apartment for most this conversation. Jason even contributes a bit.

It's just under an hour in length, starting with some talk about:

the Marin headlands, me quitting smoking, crucifixion and Passion of the Christ.

But we get to business pretty quickly, starting with the podcast's recurring segment addressing:

Listener Feedback
which includes discussion of:
the Brood (from X-Men comics), the American Everyman, our Minnesota listeners and the "Jake folder."

About 16 minutes into the podcast we move on to the first subject, a new movie that we both saw:

Rescue Dawn
including discussion of:
people who talk during movies, my overestimation of actors & movies, my trip to Sumatra and racially-segregated movies.

Next-- at about the 32-minute mark-- we switch to our second topic:

The Flier that Jason Found including discussion of:
Nick, The Savage Sword of Conan and young Asian girls (it's not what you think).

Just after 39 minutes into it, we start discussion of :

The New Deal including discussion of:
a couple of Roosevelts, the Works Progress Administration, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Civilian Conservation Corps, Dorothea Lange, social realism in rap videos, big government & openly-socialist ideas in American life, the nation's infrastructure and our time-travel fantasies.

Goddamnit my eyes hurt when you write these. Must every word be italicized or bolded sized funny? This is totally not Phil by the way.

I like the typography. Given the Bolding and the different font sizes the italics may be a bit excessive, but who gives a shit because your podcast rules and that's what matters. Another fine episode.

Bill Paxton is tight as fuck. He's really great in "Big Love." I watched a James Cameron documentary about an expedition to the Titanic, and Bill Paxton when 12000 feet down in one of the subs. It was tight to see him freak out a bit as they started the 3 hour descent, and then later get his mind blown when he saw the wreck

Good episode! I recently visited the New Haven Historical Society in Connecticut (I did) where there was an exhibit on the government funded public arts program that was part of FDR's New Deal.

It turned into a big mess once they discovered the talented artists who won the grants weren't necessarily those in need, they were actually pedigrees with expensive educational backgrounds. Of course, the artists who were truly in need weren't necessarily the most talented, and were turned down. Stuff like this--a shift toward meritocracy over more socialist-y, well-intentioned programs I think is what makes people wary of big government, and opt for true capitalism instead (though equally idealistic and tough to maintain.)

I remember Phil that you gave me... maybe you told me about... anyways, I read this comic about Wile E. Coyote being Jesus Christ, this is back in the day in High School. Its really good, and profound, and to this day is the only comic I own. In fact I even lost it one time and managed to re find an issue of it.

I am loving the podcast it is good. You could cuss or not, or you could bold and italicize, but if you two are conversing it will be good.

Also, I've been listening to quite a few podcasts in my days lately and yours is by far one of the best. In fact, there are few that I go to listen to as quickly as I do yours when I see that there is a new episode. There are many reasons for this but I'm certain its not because I know you or who you talk about, I just think it is very entertaining and I enjoy it.

We could use another New Deal. I like the idea of the government paying people to do things that make our country a nicer place to live. One of the coolest things the CCC did was to build all of the awesome hiking trails at Mt. Tam. And that's one of my favorite places to go. Also, the government could pay people to stay home and make podcasts to entertain their friends. Oh wait, they're already doing that...they just don't know it.
