Conversation #17

Conversation #17 (as always click on the picture or here to listen) comes with a disclaimer and a strong warning. The bulk of it is Jake and I discussing Dungeons and Dragons with our friends Ryan, Nick and Joe. It is not for the faint of heart. Still, it's what we talked about this past Sunday.

The five of us have been talking about playing dungeons and dragons and this served as an informational meeting. You've been warned, so please don't listen to this and then complain that it was all nerd talk. Please also note that as of today, we are going to start referring to this is a "radblast" instead of a "podcast", for obvious reasons.

Subjects addressed included: Eastern Promises, David Cronenberg, Dungeons & Dragons, the "big four" of thrash metal: Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth, Kid's Club in Santa Cruz, Phil's discovery of his dad's porn, Santa Clause DMs, Klingon & Elvish, +3 vorpal blades, non-player characters, the Player's Handbook, half-orcs, half-elves, dwarves, gnomes, halflings, faerie-folk, Conan the Barbarian, "oriental adventures", dystopian futures, bards, paladin, charisma, Cyclops and shambling mounds.

We also touched on Dire badgers, Beastmaster, druids, future primitives, psionics, Joe breaking his foot, Teddy Roosevelt, Groo, Othello, computer programmers, mages, magic missile, kobolds, magic potions, blinding light, rangers, Robin Hood, Wolverine, "feather not dot", spell failure, sorcerers, capoeira, rogue, Han Solo, Captain America, Superman, Magneto, Dracula, Nazis.

Also explored were Charles Manson, Sabretooth, compatibility between campaign party members of conflicting alignment, a story about Joe doing drugs, Smith being a good person, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Juan from Dimwit Records and dice vs. electronic character generators.

This was one of the best episodes yet. Phil did an excellent job moderating the discussion, although I would have like to hear more about actual gameplay, like what it's like in the room of a D&D game, and less about Lawful.Neutral.Chaotic/Good.Neutral.Evil.

The Crystal Skull shit is the handy work of a certain green-screen-loving-bearded-PT-cruising-man-boy. From Wikipedia: "Lucas stated that he became fascinated with crystal skulls while producing The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles in 1992. He feels that as a plot device, the skulls are as strong as the Ark of the Covenant. Spielberg and Harrison Ford balked as they found the concept of the crystal skulls was too similar to the previous films, and two years were spent reworking it into something more acceptable"

Apparently homeboy kept rejecting screenplay drafts, as if his recent work has been hecka tight. The good news is that it sounds like there will be a lot of jungle scenes, as alot of filming took place in Hawaii. Also, they hired a bunch of stunt men, so hopefully there won't be muc CGI. And Harrison Ford, supposedly, got really buff

I want in on this.

My first gameplay was when I was 15 and I was camping with Upward Bound at a ghost town/abandoned mine place up north. We stayed up for a few nights straight in an old mine smoking endless cloves. Did acid first time on that trip too.

Didn't play again until I lived in SF at about 19 years old. We had a roommate that DM'd a major cthulu campaign. We smoked about a mountain of weed. DM didn't clip his nails much.

A few years back, we tried a campaign in The Big U, but I was too old too care - finally. I think Caleb even wrote software to help him DM that one.

Favorite character was about a 9th level thief.

In real life, I am chaotic good. Many see me as just plain evil.

I can't believe you guys really went for it on that podcast. I'm surprised nobody called the cops on me - it sounded like I had a bunch of 13 year old girls in my room listening to that episode.

Keep up the good work.
